Computer repair technicians may be acting illegally 32

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, Austin, TX

4 hours ago by Katy Justice

Computer repairman and AustinPCTech owner Mike Rife had no idea - until a month ago - that he frequently breaks the law when he repairs his customers' computers.

The Institute for Justice, a legal advocacy group for entrepreneurs, informed Rife last month of a Texas state law requiring computer repair shops to have a private investigator's license to fix computers.

Sex and the pity 6

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, Austin, TX

What really got me about "Sex and the City" wasn't the dippy, Spice Girls-lite feminism espoused by Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw and her squealing, endlessly giggling gaggle of designer-laden ladies. It wasn't the offensive suggestion that the interests of ostensibly intelligent, capable career women can be boiled down to two words: "labels and love," or the insipidity of a plot in which a woman swoons over and decides to wed a man because he builds her a small mansion - here termed a "closet" - that renders said woman positively orgasmic.

The Importance of Religion 5

The Independent UTSA, University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX

2 hours ago by Chris Gieseke

In today's age of science and modern marvels there are many people who ask, "Why do we still need religion?" I mean really. Science has shown a clear path towards answering all kinds of questions that once were the domain of magic and religion. Does that not prove that religion is merely the domain of ignorance and fools who wish to believe in fairy tales purely based on what they refer to as "Faith"? This has long been one of the chief arguments made by atheists against religion.

Austin Java's sales recover following tree removal 5

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, Austin, TX

3 hours ago by Katy Justice

Business at the Barton Springs Road Austin Java has picked up after the local restaurant saw a dip in sales following comments made by Austin musician Marcia Ball.

During last Wednesday's Blues on the Green concert at Zilker Park, Ball told an audience of 6,000 that she was boycotting the restaurant for its connection with the removal of several dozen native pecan trees.

Flip-flops. So what? 5

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, Austin, TX

1 day ago by Mike Wilson

Editorial boards across the nation have come together in condemnation of Sen. Barack Obama's "flip-flop" decision to abide by public financing for his presidential campaign. Though he did not unequivocally vow to follow it, the presumed Democratic nominee repeatedly proffered strong support for public financing, promised to "aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election" and later declared he would "sit down with Sen.

Addition of Muschamp, Kines will up the intensity level in Big 12 defenses

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, TX

With the SEC winning back-to-back championships and three in the last five seasons starting with LSU's 2003 title, it's easy to argue that it is the best conference in college football.

Coaches Steve Spurrier (South Carolina), Urban Meyer (Florida), Les Miles (LSU), Nick Saban (Alabama, but won title at LSU) and Phillip Fulmer (Tennessee) have all won national championships, and Tommy Tuberville led Auburn to a 13-0 record.

Saving West Campus

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, TX

2 days ago by Dave Player

Mack trucks and cranes block the roads, debris renders sidewalks useless, an ever-present layer of dust hangs in the air, and high-rise complexes grow like weeds on every corner. West Campus has become a modern-day Babylon with new buildings cropping up one after the next.

Former coaches McWilliams and Sterkel have come full circle as a part of UT athletics

The Daily Texan, University of Texas, Austin, TX

1 day ago by David R. Henry

No one can blame former Texas football coach David McWilliams and swimming coach Jill Sterkel if they didn't want to come back to Texas. Both experienced the highest of highs as Longhorn athletes who became head coaches at their alma mater. And both ended their coaching careers on low notes, with McWilliams resigning after a 5-6 season and the popular Sterkel being dismissed after leading the women's swimming team to 13 top-10 finishes, including second place in 1994.
